How To Perform Wudu: A Step-By-Step Guide

Why it’s Important?

Wudu, also known as ablution, is an essential ritual in Islam that involves washing specific parts of the body before performing acts of worship, such as prayer or handling the Quran.

Hadith on the Importance of Purity:

There are several Hadiths (sayings and actions of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him) that emphasize the importance of purity
and ablution (wudu). Here are a few notable ones:
Narrated by Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

“Cleanliness is half of faith (Eeman)”.

Narrated by Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
“If anyone performs ablution like this ablution of mine and offers a two-rak’ah prayer during which he does not think of anything

else (not related to the prayer), then his past sins will be forgiven.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari)

How to perform?

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to perform wudu:

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to perform wudu:

Before starting wudu, have the intention in your heart that you are performing this act of purification solely for the sake of Allah.

Say ‘Bismillah’ (In the Name of Allah):

Recite “Bismillah” (In the name of Allah) before starting wudu.

Wash Hands:

Start by washing your hands up to the wrists three (3) times. This includes the fingers and the spaces between them.

Rinse Mouth:

Take a small amount of water in your cupped hand and rinse your mouth three (3) times, swishing the water around and then spitting it out.

Inhale and Exhale Water through Nose:

Inhale water into your nostrils, and then blow it out, three (3) times.

Wash Face:

Wash your face three (3) times, from the hairline to the chin and from ear to ear. Ensure that the entire face is covered, including the beard (for men) and the sideburns.

Wash Forearms:

Wash your right forearm and then your left forearm, starting from the elbow down to the fingertips, three (3) times.

Wipe Head:

Moisten your hands and wipe your head once, starting from the front of your head, moving to the back, and then back to the front.

Wipe Ears:

Use your index fingers to wipe the inside and outside of your ears, using water from the remaining wetness on your hands from wiping your head.

Wash Feet:

Wash your right foot and then your left foot, starting from the toes up to the ankles, ensuring that every part is washed, three (3) times.

Perform the Actions in Order:

It’s essential to follow the prescribed sequence while performing wudu, i.e., start with washing hands, then mouth, nose, face, forearms, head, ears, and finally, feet. Stick to this order as taught in the Sunnah (traditions) of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Dua after wudu:

After completing the wudu (ablution), Muslims often recite a dua (supplication) expressing gratitude to Allah and seeking His blessings. Here’s a common dua that is often recited after performing wudu:

 أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ

Transliteration:

Ashhadu alla ilaha illallah wahdahu la sharika lahu wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan ‘abduhu wa rasuluhu.
Translation:
“I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, without any partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger.”

Reciting this dua is a way of acknowledging the oneness of Allah and affirming the Prophethood of Muhammad (peace be upon him). It is a beautiful expression of faith and devotion, and it serves as a reminder of one’s connection with the Almighty after purifying
oneself through wudu.
