Ingredients:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 3/4 cup milk
- Green and white food coloring
- Whipped cream or buttercream frosting
- Edible star-shaped decorations (optional)
Directions:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 8-inch round cake pans.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in the vanilla extract.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the milk. Mix until just combined.
- Divide the batter into two equal portions. Add food coloring (eg. blue for United States) to one portion and mix until you achieve the desired shade of color.
- Pour the colored batter into one of the prepared cake pans, and the white batter into the other. Smooth the tops with a spatula.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean.
- Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for about 10 minutes, then remove them from the pans and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Once the cakes are completely cooled, place the white cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of frosting on top.
- Carefully place the colored cake layer on top of the white layer. Frost the entire cake with whipped cream or buttercream frosting, covering the sides and top.
- Use edible (eg. star-shaped for united states) decorations to create the creative design on the top of the cake.
- Chill the cake in the refrigerator for a couple of hours before serving to allow the frosting to set.
- Slice and serve this delightful Flag Cake to celebrate Independence Day.
